Firm mattress for sale: hips that stay, shoulders that still have a vote

Bear Original Queen $599 is the budget firm foam. Sealy hybrid $999 if you need coils under the lumbar. Extra-firm is a filter, not a dare.

Firm is a firmness number, not a personality test.

A firm mattress for sale is a bed that holds hips up. That is the whole medical-adjacent story, and it is why stomach and back sleepers end up in our warehouse asking for something that does not hammock by morning. Low back pain is not a mattress brand. It is a stack of causes. A sagging pillow-top is one of them. A mattress that is “plush” in the middle third is another. Haven Sleep Co. will sell you a firmer surface when that is the job. We will not sell you extra-firm as a personality, and we will not fake a 70 percent off Queen to make firmness feel like a deal.

On 2 September 2026 the extra-firm and firm beds we filter at /mattresses?firmness=firm are named SKUs with Queen prices you can read on a phone. Bear Original Queen is $599. Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid Queen is $999. Those are different constructions that both fight hip drop. Sleeping positions decide which one you finish the trial on. Stomach wants pushback. Back wants a lumbar zone or a medium-firm foam that does not melt. Side often wants a little more give at the shoulder — a strict extra-firm can numb an arm even when it saves a lumbar.

Firm is a shape, not a marketing word

Firmness numbers on our tags are a 1–10 feel scale, not a law. Bear Original sits around a 7, 10-inch foam, quicker than classic memory foam, Celliant cover. Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid sits around a 6 as a whole-bed average with a firmer center third. A 6 hybrid can hold a back sleeper better than a 7 foam that is soft under the hips. Always ask where the firmness lives.

Stomach sleeping puts the belly in the well. If the well is soft, the lumbar arches. You wake with that swayback tightness people stretch in the kitchen. Medium-firm to firm, a thinner profile, and a base that does not bow are the boring fix. A 14-inch euro-top “luxury firm” can still let hips dive if the quilt is a marshmallow. Saatva Classic in Luxury Firm is the uncompressed version of a held-up midsection — Queen $1839 — when you want bounce and a lumbar pad. It is not the budget firm SKU.

Back sleeping wants the same hip control with a bit more courtesy at the shoulders. Sealy’s Posturepedic story is that lumbar zone. Casper The One zones foam the other way: firmer under hips, easier at shoulders, Queen $899. Casper is not extra-firm. It is a back-sleeper foam if you hated slow melt. Bear Original is the cheaper firm foam if you also train or sleep on your stomach.

Side sleeping on a true extra-firm is how people return beds in week three with numb shoulders. If you are a side sleeper with low-back pain, you need zoned support or a medium hybrid, not a board. Helix Midnight Luxe and Beautyrest PressureSmart exist for that fork. Do not muscle through extra-firm because a forum said firm equals healthy.

Bear Original and Sealy: the two firm conversations we have all week

Bear Original: Twin $449, Twin XL $499, Queen $599, King $799. All-foam, 10 inches, athlete identity, 120-night trial. Stomach and back sleepers on a budget. Twin XL for dorms and Split King. Lighter than a hybrid. One person can unbox Twin. Queen is easier with two. It is not a plush side-sleeper hug. Ashley in our reviews mixed side and stomach and added a thin topper for the side nights. That is allowed. A thick memory-foam topper that recreates the hammock is not the point.

Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid: Queen $999. Coils, lumbar foam, sit-edge, 100-night trial, 13 inches. Desk workers, back sleepers, people who want a furniture-store hybrid without Beautyrest money. King is a different price; shop the King filter instead of multiplying Queen in your head. Needs a proper foundation. Ships in a box. Feels familiar if you grew up on innersprings.

If Bear feels too dead-on-foam and Sealy is the budget ceiling for a hybrid, you are in the right aisle. If you need plus-size firmness, neither of those is the Titan. Brooklyn Titan Plus Luxe and WinkBed are the load-rated hybrids. A firm $599 Queen foam is not a 500-pound-couple tool.

Tuft & Needle Original Queen $625 is adaptive foam, medium-firm, faster than Nectar. Back and stomach like it. Side may not. Cocoon Chill Queen $649 is medium-firm cooling foam — firmer than Nectar’s hug, useful if you want firm-ish and a cooler cover. Nectar Queen $699 is medium-firm on a tag and a slow hug in a bedroom; stomach sleepers often find it too contouring. We will not file Nectar under extra-firm to win a keyword.

Low-back pain: what a mattress can and cannot do

A mattress can stop a hammock. It cannot replace a diagnosis. If pain shoots, numbs a leg, or follows a fall, that is a clinician, not a SKU. If pain is worse on a sagging 10-year pillow-top and better on the floor, you are describing support. Floor-firm is not the goal. Neutral is the goal: hips roughly in line with shoulders on your back, no big U on your stomach.

Zoned coils and lumbar pads are mechanical answers. High-density support foam is a foam answer. A two-inch egg-crate pad is a delay. We sell toppers in bedding for pressure, not as a substitute for a dead core.

Trials are 100 to 365 nights so your back can vote after the novelty. The first week on firm can feel punishing if you came from plush. Give it more than two sleeps unless you are in sharp pain. Do not stack pillows under the knees as a forever hack if the bed is simply too soft — change the bed. Knee pillows can still help a back sleeper on a correctly firm surface. That is positioning, not a cover-up.

Shop by problem has a lower-back path. Quiz asks position before it asks brand. Use them on a phone. The Queen price on any recommended card should remain readable. We will not hide $599 Bear under a fake list of $1,800.

Filter firm to see extra-firm tags when we have them. Extra-firm is a narrower shelf. Most humans who say “firm” mean “not the sagging pillow-top.” Start medium-firm unless you already know you crush medium beds.

Frames: firm mattresses still fail on wide slats

A firm foam on slats more than three inches apart becomes a hammock in the gaps. The warranty follows the foundation, not your intentions. Measure. The Haven White Oak Platform is spec’d for foam and hybrid. Iron grids and titan steel frames exist for heavier sleepers. Frames before checkout.

King Bear at $799 is still 10-inch foam. It needs the same slat discipline as Twin at $449. People treat King like furniture and Twin like a pad. Both are mattresses. Both void the same way.

Adjustable bases: head-up can ease some back discomfort. A Split King lets one person incline. Firmness is still the mattress. An adjustable will not make Nectar into a stomach-sleeper board.

How to buy firm without over-correcting

If you sleep on your stomach: Bear Original Queen $599 or T&N Queen $625, solid platform, 100- or 120-night trial. If you want coils, Sealy Queen $999 or a firmer hybrid in the firm filter. Avoid thick euro-tops.

If you sleep on your back: Sealy Queen $999 or Casper Queen $899 if you want foam zoning instead of coils. Bear if the budget is $599 and you like a quicker foam.

If you mix stomach and side: medium-firm with a little shoulder give — Sealy, Bear Star if you like Bear but need more cushion, Helix Midnight Luxe. Not extra-firm.

If you are heavier: Titan, WinkBed, not a 10-inch foam Queen on sale.

Compare Bear and Sealy side by side. Size guide if the room is the limit. How to order, delivery, returns, sleep trial. Reviews from stomach and back sleepers. FAQ for warranty language. Contact if pain is complicated. About if you want the dock.

Sale is leftover firm sizes when we have them, not 70 percent off. Under $1,000 includes Bear, T&N, Chill, Nectar, GhostBed, Casper, Leesa, Sealy Queen. Under $500 is Twin and Twin XL: Bear Twin $449, Twin XL $499, T&N Twin $375, Chill Twin $399, Nectar Twin $349. No firm Queen at $399 exists here.

If you only take one paragraph to the checkout

Stomach or back, budget foam: Bear Original, Queen $599, King $799, Twin $449, Twin XL $499, slats at 3 inches or less.

Back, hybrid, sit on the edge: Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid, Queen $999, 100 nights.

Heat plus firm-ish foam: Cocoon Chill Queen $649.

Luxury firm bounce: Saatva Classic Queen $1839, measure the stairs.

Open /mattresses?firmness=firm, read the Queen price on your phone, take the quiz if position is mixed, and do not buy extra-firm to punish a side-sleeper shoulder.

FAQ

Firmest cheap Queen?

Bear Original is the budget medium-firm foam. Stomach sleepers often stop there.

Firm enough for back pain?

Hips should not hammock. Shoulders still need some give if you side-sleep.

Extra firm?

Use the extra-firm filter. Do not buy pain on purpose.

Can I soften a firm bed?

A 2-inch topper. Extra-deep sheets. It is a compromise, not a new mattress.

Trial if it is too firm?

100–365 nights. Give it ~30 nights unless it is clearly painful.
